Your choice, your responsibility

Updated: Oct 6, 2023

This can sometimes be a touchy subject , especially as some of the words in this blog will hold a mirror up to you and that can sometimes be difficult to accept.

Please understand this post is written with NO judgement and with the sole intention of holding a mirror up to you to realise that the reasons and excuses you may not have reached your goals yet are down to you.

No matter the goal you have to accept that you have a choice.

You can choose to perform positive behaviours and habits to move towards your goals OR you can choose poor habits and behaviours that move you further away from your goals.

No judgement here, it just is that simple. It is your choice.

It is also your responsibility to make the necessary changes.

It is no one else's responsibility to do this for you.

Your choice, your responsibility.

I hear far too many excuses as to why people achieve their goals, why they ended up being “Really good” for 1-2 weeks and then reverted back to their old habits. that do not support their goals.

These excuses usually start something like:

  • My friend wanted a Chinese so I HAD to have one

  • Somebody from the office brought in a box of sweets so I HAD to eat them

  • I HAVE to buy them in for my kids so I just end up eating them because they are there

  • I didn’t go to the gym BECAUSE MY FRIEND couldn’t make it

  • I was busy SO HAD to get the McDonalds

In all of the above statements you have a choice so stand up and take responsibility for it.

  • Just because your friend wants a Chinese does not mean you have to have one. You have the option to say NO and the responsibility to yourself not to eat foods that will leave you feeling guilty and start feeling down on yourself (you should never feel guilty eating foods).

  • Just because somebody brings in chocolates, sweets or donuts does not mean you need to eat them. Your simple choice is yes I want some or no I don’t. To help then get colleagues to put them out of your reach and view.

  • Kids DON’T HAVE to eat crisps or chocolates therefore you don’t have to have them in the house. Whilst it may be true these foods will be tempting if they are in your house you still have the choice. It is your choice to eat them or not. If you can’t say no then try buying things you don’t like for the kids.

  • Just because your friend can’t make it to the gym with you does not mean you shouldn’t go. Once again it is your choice so don’t use the excuse that you didn’t go because your friend didn’t go. Actually you didn’t go because you chose not to.

  • Being busy and on the go does not mean you have to resort to poor fast food. Again you have the choice. With supermarkets in every city and normally in close proximity to any towns you do NOT HAVE TO eat food that will make you feel like crap.

Any goal you ever wish to achieve will be a long and winding road. It won’t see linear progress and it won’t be easy or simple.

In fact it will be difficult. It will be made even more difficult if you continue to choose the habits and behaviours that move you away from your goals.

Every situation you will find yourself in will leave you with a choice.

That is YOUR choice and you should make this based on your goals NOT based on what others around you want to do. I get it, I really do.

Peer pressure can feel really difficult but you still have a choice and you owe it to your future self to make choices based on what you both want and need, rather than what others need from you.

If you always find yourself in these situations then maybe it is time to change the situations.

So the next time you are trying to tell yourself a story and blame others for the reasons you haven’t done what you know you need to do to achieve your goals take responsibility for your own actions.

It is not other people’s fault you have found yourself in the position you are in therefore you should not rely on others to help you out. Accept responsibility for what you do or do not do.

Own your decisions.

When you finally start to take responsibility for your own actions you will find you feel less guilt and push towards your goals much faster.
