The 15 minute habit rule

Updated: Oct 6, 2023

Are you an all or nothing type person?

Most people are and find that if they can’t do it all we they don't do anything.

When it comes to training (or any other habit) this can be detrimental to your progress however.

It’s why we at JW Fitness recommend the 15 minute rule. With the 15 minute rule the goal is just to do something whether you are motivated or not.

Let's face it we all lose motivation from time to time. The thought of having to go out for a run or get to the gym to train is overwhelming.

We kid ourselves by saying we will go tomorrow but when tomorrow comes and it is another missed session.

Well this is where the 15 minute rule comes in.

Instead of thinking about the whole session or the whole run just go and do 15 minutes.

That could be getting to the gym and just doing the warm up.

Or sticking your running shoes on and running around the block a couple of times.

Why 15 minutes?

Everyone has 15 minutes. It is very difficult to find an excuse that we haven’t got 15 minutes to do some exercise.

Although this can be done with 5 or 10 minutes as well, these times may be discarded as “What's the point in only doing 5 minutes, it won’t do anything?”

By implementing the 15 minute rule 1 of 2 things will happen.

1. You do the 15 minutes then go back home. You have at least kept the habit of going to the gym or getting out for a run. You have done the hardest bit by getting yourself up and out when it would of been easier to curl up with a brew and watch a film.

2. You do the 15 minutes and then continue to finish your workout. The hardest bit is starting so by hitting the 15 minutes you may find:

  • After 15 minutes you have done the hardest part of getting yourself up and out

  • This taps into the all or nothing attitude. Why leave after 15 minutes?

  • Once you have started to move and warm up you will start to feel good as you get the endorphins going

So if you struggle to motivate yourself to get up and out for a run or to the gym then start to implement the 15 minute rule.

Turn up, get 15 minutes done then either go home or smash the rest of your session.

Either way you will feel better for getting something done and not staying sat on your bum for the night.
